Void of the need for live data and its availability, autogen’s approach focusses on the data warehouse itself to automatically generate synthetic test data – totaly independent from live data and delivery systems. The volume of the test data is scalable. autogen’s editor can visualize the relations between the tables that result from the analysis of the DWH.
Scenario: Operational Test - “Smoke Test”: After the new version of the data warehouse is available, a team proves the functionality by running some initial tests. With autogen test data is automatically synthesized. Despite the low data volume the test coverage is comprehensive. The advantage is the rapid turnover. Potential issues can be solved efficiently as these tests can be repeated at low cost. This strategy of initial tests is also useful when porting data warehouses to new versions of the system or to other systems or platforms.
Phase of Analysis: Test cases (including the targets) are defined in parallel to requirements of new functionality of a data warehouse. This “test-first” approach is common in agile methodology and allows for rapid, automated testing of the newly implemented functionality. The modelling of the use cases focusses on the database columns that are relevant to the requirements. periplus autogen complements the existing data so that the test data can be loaded. periplus autogen detects any changes that are not part of the original requirements by comparing specifically listed tables and fields. The test cases can be reused for later releases, which in turn enable regression tests that make side effects of future implementations transparent. Test managers can capitalize from this growing potential as by-and-by test-suites become complete and comprehensive.
Scenario: “Real Life” - Time Constraints and Limited Resources: The new version of the data warehouse is available and must be tested. Sad but common, there are limited testing resources and tight time constraints to be kept. periplus autogen helps managing the risks. In the Editor changes to the structure of the previous version of the data warehouse are highlighted in colors. Following issues are addressed: What has been changed? What are the dependencies? Which areas are not covered by tests? This helps the test manager to develop test strategies under the aspect of risk management. Using the Editor, the relevant test cases can be identified. Only relevant fields are in focus and can be completed automatically using periplus autogen. Again, these test cases can later be added to regression testing.
